The workday was not over when County Mayor Li Zhixin’s office phone started ringing.
Li Zhixin was tapping his fingers on the table, lost in thought. It would have been better if they didn’t continue probing, but now it seemed impossible. Well, he would have to be a bit more forceful. If needed, he would cause some trouble for both Xie and Dong, making them busy with their affairs. Xie Huilan’s identity as Deputy City mayor was the only troublesome factor. Still, it didn’t matter. She was just a deputy mayor from another city. No matter how long their hands were, they couldn’t reach Cheng Gang County.
Li Zhixin believed he had them under control.

After snapping out of his thoughts, Li Zhixin realized the phone had been ringing for quite some time. He looked at the number, raised his hand, and answered, ‘Hello, I’m Li Zhixin.’
“Mayor Li, there’s trouble.”
“What trouble?”
“Secretary Zhou and Director Wang are in trouble.”
“Take it slow. Tell me what happened,” Li Zhixin frowned.
The person on the other end of the line hurriedly said, “Half an hour ago, Secretary Zhou, Director Wang, and Mayor Dong went to the new County Party Committee building courtyard. Not long after, there was an accident. Construction materials, including steel plates, fell even more than last time. Secretary Zhou, Director Wang, Director Li, and Mr. Sun from the construction company were all hit. Two on-duty police officers were also hit.”
Li Zhixin was annoyed. ‘Weren’t the construction materials fixed in place?’
“They were fixed.” The person quickly explained. “Mr. Sun personally supervised the work upstairs and tied many ropes for reinforcement, but they still fell due to strong winds today.”
“How are they?”
“They’ve been taken to the hospital.”
“I’m asking what kind of injuries they sustained.”
“The legs of the two police officers are crushed, a steel plate cut off Secretary Zhou’s thighs, and I didn’t look closely at the others. It’s too tragic.”
Li Zhixin was bewildered. “Tell me again.”
“Maimed, all of them. It’s a scene of severed limbs, very frightening.”
“Did anyone escape unharmed? Did anyone die?”
“Thankfully, no one died. They are all alive. Fortunately, only one person, Dong Xuebing from Zhen Shui County, was not hit. He didn’t suffer any injuries.”

“Mayor Li, are you coming to take a look,” the person asked.

“Mayor Dong.”

“What happened at the new County Party Committee building courtyard just now?”

Dong Xuebing said, “While you were asleep, construction materials fell from the new County Party Committee building courtyard again. I was there with the people who pushed you. As a result, several of them are now disabled. Zhou Wei lost both legs, the construction company owner, Mr. Sun, broke one leg, two planning officials lost an ear and a shoulder, and the other lost a nose and lips. Two government officials from the county office suffered a broken neck, resulting in lifelong paralysis for one and a broken hand for the other. Xie Huilan glanced at him. “Are you behind this?”

Xie Huilan reminded him, “Be careful.”
Dong Xuebing nodded. “I understand. Do you still doubt my ability to handle things? They won’t find anything on me, and there’s nothing to investigate in the first place.”
