I am a Primitive Man

Chapter 909: The Divine Child Battles a Horde of Monkeys

It wasn’t only Gu who was stunned—many of the people working there alongside him were completely dumbfounded as well.

After all, it hadn’t been very long since the Divine Child and his group had left, and when they departed, they had clearly said they wouldn’t be returning until the following year.

Filled with confusion and delight, Gu and the others went forward to welcome them. After some conversation, they quickly understood what had happened.

Gu and the rest looked at the people from the Nose Ring and Ear Ring tribes, all of them visibly overjoyed.

Of course, they were happy. They had seen people given away before, but they had never seen people lining up to be delivered like this.

Fortunately, people of this era were honest and straightforward. They had never encountered staged scams, nor did they know what such things were. Otherwise, Gu and the others would definitely have suspected that the Nose Ring Tribe’s chief was deliberately doing this to join their tribe.

It would have been just like the Yelang Kingdom during the Han Dynasty—deliberately putting on all kinds of cute acts, washing themselves clean, and then presenting themselves under the rule of the Han Empire.

While Gu and the others joyfully examined the people from the Nose Ring and Ear Ring tribes, those from the Nose Ring, Ear Ring, and One-Eye tribes were likewise staring in astonishment at everything before them.

There were vast expanses and great piles of small fruits here.

Before this, they had never imagined that a single place could gather so much food!

Those donkeys that could be ridden—not only could they be eaten or used for riding, but they could also pull so much cargo at once?

And those strange caves—so huge and magnificent-looking…

The Nose Ring Tribe’s chief, lying on a stretcher, had his mouth wide open. His head was spinning; he felt as though an overwhelming shock had struck him.

It felt as if his eyes were no longer enough to take everything in.

Amid his amazement, a voice in his heart kept shouting:

A divine tribe! I was right! This is the divine tribe!

If this weren’t a divine tribe, how could it possess so many astonishing things, how could it accomplish such unimaginable feats?

Only a divine tribe, and people of a divine tribe, could own these things and create them!

If it weren’t for his crippled leg and the inconvenience of lying on a stretcher, the Nose Ring Tribe’s chief would have already prostrated himself on the ground again, using his own way to express the shock in his heart and his reverence for the divine tribe.

He wasn’t the only one thinking this way. The others whom he had influenced earlier were thinking the same.

The people of the Green Sparrow Tribe didn’t even need to say much—these people had already filled in everything with their own imaginations.

This was the terrifying power of self-brainwashing.

However, this was only the beginning. After staying here for a short while and speaking with Gu and the others, Third Senior Brother and his group set off again toward the main Green Sparrow Tribe.

“#¥5@#4……”

When he saw the towering cave that was like a sheer cliff wall, the endless food, even more people of the divine tribe, and even larger herds of sheep, deer, and other animals, the Nose Ring Tribe’s chief—utterly shocked beyond endurance—finally snapped.

He let out a howl, rolled off the stretcher, ignored the pain in his injured leg, and threw himself prostrate on the ground. His mouth overflowed with devout, fanatical cries; his whole body trembled slightly with excitement and other emotions, his face flushed red.

Driven by his actions, the others from the surrounding tribes who had been stunned by the sight also snapped out of it.

They followed the Nose Ring Tribe chief’s example, all prostrating themselves on the ground, shouting with reverence and excitement.

This scene left the shaman, Eldest Senior Brother, and others who had stayed behind at the main tribe completely dumbfounded, unable to understand why these people had suddenly become like this.

After learning the course of events from Third Senior Brother and realizing that these people had mistaken their tribe for a divine tribe, the shaman, Eldest Senior Brother, and the rest of the Green Sparrow Tribe members present couldn’t help but beam with smiles.

Although they knew this was a misunderstanding—their tribe wasn’t divine, and everything they had was built bit by bit through hard work under the Divine Child’s leadership—being called a divine tribe and receiving such respectful devotion still felt immensely satisfying.

They even found these people far more pleasing to look at as a result.

The Nose Ring Tribe’s chief, because of this action, unknowingly triggered—and also avoided—a terrible disaster.

One had to know that the Green Sparrow Tribe often killed the leaders of hostile tribes they captured.

When the Nose Ring Tribe chief prostrated himself, and the others followed suit, it immediately drew the old shaman’s attention.

Almost instantly, the thought of killing this man arose in his mind.

After learning what the gesture meant, the shaman dispelled the thought, but still secretly resolved to keep a close eye on the Nose Ring Tribe chief.

Of course, another reason for not killing him was that the Divine Child handled this matter. Since the Divine Child hadn’t killed him, it wouldn’t be appropriate for the shaman to do so either.

After some time, the people from the Nose Ring, Ear Ring, and One-Eye tribes were taken away to be dealt with separately.

The people from the Nose Ring and Ear Ring tribes were brought into the slave compound, becoming new slaves of the Green Sparrow Tribe, while the primitive women holding infants became citizens of the tribe.

Everyone in the tribe was already familiar with this process, so there was no need for a detailed description.

While arrangements were being made, the shaman, Eldest Senior Brother, and the others also learned from Third Senior Brother about the Divine Child’s plan to build a new sub-tribe not too far from the mountain entrance.

Naturally, they had no objections and immediately began preparing, providing all kinds of support for Third Senior Brother’s next journey.

On the morning of the third day after Third Senior Brother’s return, Third Senior Brother led a group carrying a new Green Sparrow banner, along with tools and food, and left the Green Sparrow Tribe. Following the same road they had walked a couple of days earlier, they continued south.

Including the Third Senior Brother, a total of eighty people were dispatched.

Among them were ten Green Sparrow citizens who had returned with Third Senior Brother, ten old slaves, and five new slaves. In addition, the tribe the primitive women came from, as well as the Nose Ring and Ear Ring tribes, each sent five people.

The remaining forty were made up of other experienced members of the Green Sparrow Tribe.

For the current Green Sparrow Tribe, it was still possible to spare this many people.

After nearly eleven or twelve days of traveling south, Third Senior Brother and his group once again arrived at the location of the One-Eye Tribe.

They didn’t linger at the cave where the One-Eye Tribe had been. Instead, under Third Senior Brother’s lead, they went straight to the area previously planned by Han Cheng.

They first set up tents and a temporary camp, unloaded their supplies, and then began building semi-subterranean circular houses.

These simple, easy-to-build houses served as work sheds and temporary dwellings.

Once these were built and everyone had a fixed, decent place to live, they could then focus on constructing the remaining parts and developing the third sub-tribe, which Han Cheng had named the Qinling Residential Area.

As the Third Senior Brother and the others began their labor, the area gradually changed. Large swathes of grass and trees were cleared, several dome-shaped simple houses appeared, and around them, wooden stakes were driven into the ground and ropes strung up, forming simple fence walls.

After finishing this, they began excavating the foundations. The construction of the Qinling Residential Area officially began…

Amid the vast mountain ranges, Han Cheng led a group of Green Sparrow Tribe members through the terrain.

The mountain paths were rugged and demanding, yet the scenery was breathtaking.

The first two times they passed through here, they had already felt that the scenery was beautiful. Now, in autumn, with yellow leaves, red leaves, and red fruits as adornments, the view was even more stunning.

Sure enough, generally speaking, the more untouched a place was by human presence, the more beautiful its scenery.

The scenery here was indeed so alluring that even the well-traveled Divine Han couldn’t help swallowing as he stared at the cliffs.

Not because his tastes had suddenly become refined enough to find beauty appetizing, but because the little lantern-like fruits hanging from the branches were simply too tempting.

These lantern-like fruits weren’t persimmons—they were tangerines!

Deep in the mountain forest, if the massive mountain range they had crossed were split in two, this area would belong to the southern half.

The northern mountains blocked much of the cold, so it wasn’t surprising to find tangerines here. After all, who could say what was or wasn’t possible in the primitive era?

Han Cheng had no interest in pondering whether it was reasonable for tangerines to appear here. His mind was wholly occupied with how to pick some and satisfy his craving.

Tangerines, apples, and bananas were among the three most common fruits in later times. Especially in autumn, when tangerines ripened, they could be seen everywhere—on streets, in supermarkets, and in shops.

Compared to close relatives like oranges and pomelos, tangerines were also more affordable, making them a popular choice.

At least, before Han Cheng transmigrated, he often bought tangerines to eat in autumn.

After arriving in this era, many things became luxuries.

Tangerines were one of them.

Now that he had found them again—and ones that didn’t require money to buy—it would be strange if he could walk away.

But picking these tangerines wasn’t easy, because they grew on extremely high cliffs that were hard to climb.

However, this kind of problem couldn’t stump a Divine Han who was desperate for tangerines.

He stopped Second Senior Brother and the others who wanted to climb the rock wall, casually took off his backpack, and placed it on his head.

“Everyone with backpacks, put them on your heads. Those with vine shields, stand them upright. Those without backpacks hide behind the vine shields. Everyone squats down and prepares for defense.”

Han Cheng issued these orders.

Hearing this, everyone was startled and instinctively looked around, but they saw no danger.

This made them puzzled as to why the Divine Child had suddenly given such orders.

Still, puzzled or not, they obediently followed his instructions.

After seeing everyone prepared, Han Cheng picked up several stones from the ground and hurled them with force, one by one, toward the cliff covered in tangerine trees.

After throwing them, wearing vine armor and balancing the backpack on his head, he hopped around in place three times, looking rather ridiculous.

Some people couldn’t help laughing at their Divine Child’s appearance.

But they soon stopped laughing—and understood why he had ordered them to prepare defenses and why he had been throwing stones and hopping around.

As soon as the stones hit the cliff, a chorus of chittering sounds erupted from above, and the branches and leaves began to shake violently.

After Han Cheng hopped and spun three times with the backpack on his head, the angry chittering grew even louder.

As the noise intensified, the Divine Child—usually so tall and mighty in their eyes—squatted down in an instant, lightning-fast, still wearing the backpack.

Then, amid furious chattering, countless objects were hurled down from the cliff.

They were tangerines—yellow skins tinged with red.

Han Cheng held the backpack steady with one hand and casually scooped up a tangerine that had rolled near his feet with the other, his face full of smiles.

These guys were just too easy to trick.

Behind him, Second Senior Brother and the others stared dumbfounded at the tangerines raining from above and rolling across the grass.

Before this, they had never imagined fruit could be harvested this way.

While gaping in astonishment, they also gained yet another round of admiration for the Divine Child’s cleverness.

They weren’t the only ones enjoying themselves—the monkeys jumping around on the cliff were also clearly delighted.

Hadn’t they beaten those big, large-bodied monkeys below into squatting helplessly on the ground?

Monkeys were creatures with no long-term memory; otherwise, people wouldn’t have invented stories about little monkeys going down the mountain, picking things up along the way, and throwing them away just as quickly.

After bombarding Han Cheng and the others with tangerines, the monkeys fell into a frenzy of self-amusement.

So Han Cheng stood up and started throwing the smashed tangerines back at them.

Needless to say, this quickly triggered another round of human–monkey warfare.

After repeating this several times, the area where Han Cheng and his group stood was carpeted with tangerines—far more efficient than picking them by hand.

About half of the tangerines were smashed. Han Cheng had people sort them: the intact ones in one pile, the burst and juicy ones in another.

Peeling open a burst tangerine, discarding the bad segments and popping the good ones into his mouth—it was sweet and sour, a pleasant flavor… just with too many seeds.
